An IDC Staff Instructor is to a Course Director what an Assistant Instructor is to an Instructor. IDC Staff instructors play a key role in instructor courses and in instructor level continuing education programs. They teach academic portions of the course, do practical sessions in the pool and open water and evaluate candidate teaching presentations.
The preparation for these duties is called the IDC Staff Instructor Course. There are two options to complete training. The first two days are always the same – in these two days key aspects of the IE are repeated to assure that the knowledge and skills of the candidate are up-to-date and the candidate participates in some lectures on the standards of instructor level courses, as well as an introduction to evaluation techniques. For the second part of the course the first option is to audit a complete IDC (AI and OWSI), which takes a minimum of nine days. The second option is a four day program in which the candidates presents key subjects from the Assistant Instructor course and is evaluated on content and style. In that case the complete course takes six days. Regardless which option you chose, the IDC Staff course is always invoiced as 6 days of training (we consider the 9 days auditing to be equivalent to 4 training days).

To participate in the IDC Staff Instructor Course, you must be certified as a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer. Candidates are required to have a personal copy of the PADI Course Director Manual and Evaluation Slates. These products are combined in the IDC Staff Instructor Kit.
Teaching instructor level courses is a task with a high level of responsibility. You are not only allowed to assist in IDCs, but also in Specialty Instructor courses. To fulfill that role in an appropriate manner, you should consider to visit some Specialty Instructor courses yourself to get a better grip on what is expected from you once you are certified.
